Plaintiff records companies sued unknown ("John Doe") defendants for copyright infringement at Georgetown University using peer-to-peer file sharing. Although plaintiffs do not know the tru names of the Doe defendants, plaintiffs have identified each defendant by unique Internet Protocol Addresses (IPs).
Held: plaintiffs may serve a Rule 45 subpoena upon Georgetown University to obtain the true identity of each Doe defendant.
