Florida Patent Publication Trends

Thursday, August 25, 2011
By Smith & Hopen

With certain exceptions, nonprovisional utility and plant applications for patent filed on or after November 29, 2000 are published promptly after the expiration of a period of eighteen months from the earliest filing date for which a benefit is sought under title 35, United States Code (eighteen-month publication or pre-grant publication (PGPub)). Trends show below are generally representative of patent filing activity occuring eighteen months prior to the publication date.

Methodogy:
Data was extracted from the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office Patent Application Full Text and Image Database.  The queries were run for the institution as the assignee over an entire year.  For example, to pull all issued 2010 patent application publications for the University of Central Florida (UCF), the following query was executed: AN/"University of Central Florida" and PD/$/$/2010 against the advanced search interface.
