Finding/Replacing Scientific Symbols

Problem:  Neither ePave nor PASAT accept Greek letters in the Symbol font set.  The inventor would write up a Word document using Times New Roman as the base font, but then using the Symbol font set to insert Greek characters such as β (beta) or λ (lambda).

Solution:  Find the actual code of the character using INSERT > SYMBOL > KEYBOARD

Notice that the Font: is set to Symbol.  Hit the Shortcut Key....

Notice that the number for the Symbol is 61538.

Find the symbol character in Times New Roman (or Arial).  The Subset will generally be Basic Greek.  Insert this into an arbitrary location on the document then copy it to your clipboard.

Take the number for the symbol and add a ^u before it in a search and replace dialog box.  Paste the Time New Roman symbol in the "Replace with" box.  Be sure to use the Format button (lower left) to designate the type of font for each field.

Click the "Replace All" button and it should work.
